Workshop Overview: Music in Playback Theatre can be very powerful. It can enrich the portrayal of a moment or story, and it can bring shape and meaning to the performance ritual. As actors and musicians, how do we use sound? And how do use silence? Whatever our starting point, the overall aim of this weekend is to help build confidence to use more music, sound and song in our work. We will play with rhythm, sound, voice and song, experiment with simple ideas, and learn practical techniques that emphasise the use of music in short forms and longer stories - so that our playing back is deeper, more creative, and more complete.
About the Facilitator: Steve Nash is a founding member, actor, and musician with Playback Theatre York, established in 1991. As a graduate of the CPT Leadership Programme and an Accredited Trainer, he brings decades of experience in both Playback Theatre and mental health work. With a background as an Occupational Therapist and Dramatherapist, Steve has helped develop alternative arts-based support services and is currently co-editor of the IPTN Journal. He regularly performs as a musician and playbacker worldwide and is passionate about recognizing and expanding the role of music in Playback Theatre.

Social Justice Framework
Based on the awareness that the whole world is defined by a history of systemic oppression that has left deep wounds in communities all over the globe and seeking to practice Playback Theatre as a tool for social justice and equity work, Healing on the Move defines as the structuring principle of its spaces the need to contribute, to the best of our ability, to identifying and dismantling ableism, ageism, anti-fatness, anti-Gypsyism, anti-Semitism, classism, colonialism, Islamophobia, LGBTQIAP+phobia, patriarchy, racism, sexism, speciesism, white supremacy, xenophobia, Zionism, and any other forms of oppression and structural injustice. We therefore call on playbackers who would like to join us in our work to share this commitment, bringing with them an awareness of how they relate to these issues and the central importance of working together to recognize the diversity and the rights of non-hegemonic identities and voices. We know that each person may be at a different stage in this often difficult, uncomfortable and non-linear process of gaining awareness. This statement seeks to underline the importance of moving in the same direction, even if not side by side, when it comes to working for a more equitable world.
